With reference to your letter 'Ho, 26608/1916 of
the Fth instant, on the subject of a proposed shipment of feathers by the Nordisk Fjerfabrik from Hongkong to Copenhagen, I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to
request you to inform Mr. Secretary Bonar Law that his
attention has been drawn to the fact that proceedings are pending in the Prise Court against this Company in respect
of certain similar shipments of feathers to Denmark, as
the Contraband Committee at the Foreign Office have reason
to believe that feathers, which have a military value in
Germany, are finding their way into that country through Scandinavian ports. Under these circumstances Sir E. Grey
is of opinion that it would not be advisable to allow the
export from Hongkong of so considerable a shipment as the
one in question until the Company is able to satisfy His
Majesty's Government that no part of it will be allowed
to reach an enemy country.
I am to suggest, should Mr. Secretary Bonar Law
see no objection, that instructions to this effect may be
telegraphed to the Governor of Hongkong.
The Under-Secretary of State,
COLONIAL OFFICE.
I am,
sir.
Your most obedient,
humble Servant,
CONTROLLER.
